A Town Hall Series: BLM Movement and the Leather / Kink Community
A monthly, Multi-Part Virtual Town Hall Series by ONYX Mid-Atlantic, running from July through December 2020.
This series takes an in-depth, no-holds-barred look at what it means to be Black in Leather and the issues we encounter as a result. Our series is facilitated by ONYX Mid-Atlantic’s Education Chair, Lynx ONYX.
On Saturday, July 18, 2020, The Men of ONYX Mid-Atlantic held its first in a series of Virtual Town Halls to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement as it relates to the Leather Community. An ONYX Table Talk | BLM + Leather Culture.
Panelists for this first session included leatherfolk from throughout the community, including: Tyesha Nicole Best, Graylin Thornton, ThatSandy, Sir Wu & slave deedee, BlackKat (BK), Kai Anderson and Spec Black.

On Saturday, September 12, 2020, The Men of ONYX Mid-Atlantic held its second Virtual Town Hall to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement as it relates to the Leather Community: An ONYX Table Talk | BLM Across the Generations.
We took a look back over the generations and spoke with leather people who were there during previous movements for social justice and equality. We heard from voices familiar with our past while comparing and contrasting them with contemporary voices from the community. This session examined how social and civil movements have evolved and what that did to cultivate the culture of Leather as we’ve come to know it today.
Panelists for this session included leatherfolk from throughout the community, including: Mama Vi Johnson, Girl Complex, Daddy Richard, and Tiger ONYX. Our discussion was facilitated by ONYX Mid-Atlantic’s Lynx.

On Saturday, October 10, 2020, The Men of ONYX Mid-Atlantic held its third Virtual Town Hall to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement as it relates to the Leather Community: An ONYX Table Talk | BLM Race & Sexuality.
We examined how the BLM movement has stirred up questions about race and sexuality in the leather community. We heard from elders in the community along with our up and coming future leaders.
Panelists for this session included leatherfolk from throughout the community, including: Stephen Bailous ONYX, Counselor Ochumaré ONYX, Master Blue & blue frost and Majorminor (ONYX). Our discussion was facilitated by ONYX Mid-Atlantic’s Lynx.

On Saturday, November 14, 2020, The Men of ONYX Mid-Atlantic held its fourth and final Virtual Town Hall to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement as it relates to the Leather Community: An ONYX Table Talk | BLM The “ISM Effect”.
We examined the intersection of BLM and Person of Color components of the Leather Community, covering such topics as Colorism, Body Image, Gender Identity / Expression and Religion.
Panelists for this session included leatherfolk from throughout the community, including: Mx. Symphonee, Legionnaire ONYX, Pup Yoshi ONYX, Golden Eagle ONYX (Iah Julai) and Mufasa Ali (ONYX). Our discussion was facilitated by ONYX Mid-Atlantic’s Lynx.
